BMW R1200C ‘The James Bond BMW’ – our next custom cruiser
August 8, 2016
In the quest for sales most bike manufacturers have pursued Harley down the cruiser route. In the case of BMW it was with the quirky R1200C with its paralever front suspension. Probably the high point of this bike was its appearance in the 1997 James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. It never quite made it as a mainstream seller (total of some 41,000 sold between 1997 and 2005) and it underwent relatively little model development – really just getting alloy wheels (the Independent and Montauk) and the full dresser R1200CL. However, it is a different and interesting cruiser and thus we reckoned it should become the third in our series of custom cruisers (after the 2015 Rocket Bobber and the 2016 Valkyrie Tracker). Hence we acquired this 2001 Independent with the intention of preparing it for the 2017 riding season. It is in great shape and came at a reasonable cost. We are now looking for design ideas and hence any innovative thoughts would be highly appreciated. Current thoughts point towards a solo seat, 2-into-1 exhaust, much less chrome, flat bars, black wheels and…….? Our thinking is to continue with the theme of mainly cosmetic mods to ensure that the underlying bike remains comfortable and rideable.
